Enchanted place. N.V. Gogol "The Enchanted Place": description, characters, analysis of the work The image of the narrator from the fairy tale an enchanted place

The story "The Enchanted Place" N.V. Gogol is included in the cycle of stories "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". At the beginning of the whole cycle, N.V. Gogol says that he did not invent these stories himself. The beekeeper Panko told him about them. And the beekeeper heard these stories from different people. It turns out that the true narrator of the story about the enchanted place is the beekeeper. But when you start reading the story, you will find out that this was told to the beekeeper Panko by one deacon. Himself
the clerk was also not a participant in the events. Everything that happens in the story was told to him by his grandfather. After all, when all this happened, the deacon was only eleven years old. The story is about an enchanted place. One day, grandfather Maxim was dancing and accidentally ended up in an enchanted place. He immediately thought that there was a treasure. Several times he tried to dig it out. When he managed to do this, grandfather Maxim ran home. He climbed over the wattle fence, and they doused him with slop. But he was still pleased. After all, he found a treasure. But when the boiler was opened, there was all sorts of nonsense. Grandfather Maxim has since bequeathed to everyone not to play with the devil. I think that if there were no hero-narrator-grandfather Maxim in this story, then it would turn out that all events are true. And so it turns out that the author talks about them as if in a third person. First, grandfather Maxim told the deacon, then the deacon told the beekeeper Panko, and only then Gogol wrote a story about it. It seems to me that the author does not believe in the truth of this story. But he shows us the thoughts of the heroes of the story, what they believe in. That's why he came up with the figure of the beekeeper Panko. The fact that the story "The Enchanted Place" is built as a "story within a story" allows not only to convey the thoughts and feelings of the characters, but also to recreate the atmosphere in which such stories were invented and told. It seems as if you hear the voice of the narrator and plunge into the world of the heroes of the story by N.V. Gogol.

Our summary of The Enchanted Place can be used for a reader's diary. An even more brief retelling of the work is in Gogol's article "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". "The Enchanted Place" is the fourth and final story of the second part of "Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka" by Gogol. It is again told by the deacon of the local church, Foma Grigoryevich. The main character of the story is his grandfather, already familiar to readers from the story "The Lost Letter".

One summer, when Foma Grigoryevich was still a small child, his grandfather sowed a garden with melons and watermelons along the road and sold the fruits from it to merchants passing by. Once, about six wagons stopped by the garden, in which grandfather's old acquaintances rode. Delighted by the meeting, the grandfather treated his old friends well, and then, in joy, started dancing. Making, despite his old age, various intricate knees, he reached a certain place near the garden with cucumbers - and there his grandfather's legs suddenly became like wooden ones and ceased to serve him. Stepping back, he accelerated again, but in the same place he again became, as if bewitched. Cursing Satan, grandfather suddenly heard someone laughing behind him. He looked around and saw that he was not at all where he had been a moment before, but on the other side of his village. And in the yard it was no longer day, but night.

At a distance, grandfather noticed a grave. A candle suddenly flared on it, followed by another. According to popular legend, such things happened in places where treasures were buried. Grandfather was very happy, but he did not have a spade or a shovel with him. Noticing a place with a treasure with a large branch, grandfather returned home.

The next day he went to dig the treasure with a spade. It turned out, however, that the place he had seen did not look quite the same as the day before. The view of the surroundings was different, and the grandfather could not find the branch left yesterday. Turning back, he walked through the garden to an enchanted place where he did not dance, in his hearts he struck the ground with a spade - and again found himself on the same outskirts of the village, where he had been the day before. Now she looks like she did then. Grandfather immediately saw there both a grave and a branch left on it.

Grandfather began to dig in search of treasure and soon stumbled upon a cauldron in the ground. “Ah, my dear, there you are!” - shouted the grandfather, and these words of his were suddenly repeated in human voices by a bird flying in from nowhere, a ram's head hanging from a tree and a roaring bear. A terrible mug appeared from the stump of a neighboring tree, a deep failure suddenly seemed to grandfather, and behind him was a huge mountain. Somehow overcoming fear, he pulled out a cauldron with a treasure from the ground, grabbed it and ran as fast as he could. From behind, someone is whipping with rods on his legs ...

Meanwhile, in the garden, Foma, his brothers, and their mother, who had come to feed them dinner, wondered: where had grandfather gone again? Having collected the slop in a bucket after supper, the mother was looking for where to pour it, and suddenly she saw: a tub was moving towards her, as if by itself. The mother thought that the guys were joking and splashed slop into a tub, but then a scream was heard, and instead of a tub, she saw in front of her a covered grandfather with a large cauldron in his hands. However, instead of the gold that the old man hoped to find, there was rubbish and squabbles in the cauldron ...

And no matter how much they sowed later, Gogol writes, that enchanted place in the middle of the garden, nothing worthwhile has ever grown there. There was such a rise in this place that it was impossible to make out: a watermelon is not a watermelon, a pumpkin is not a pumpkin, a cucumber is not a cucumber ... the devil knows what it is!

The story of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol "The Enchanted Place" is part of the collection of stories "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". The story is told from the perspective of a deacon – about a story that happened to his grandfather Maxim when the deacon himself was only 11 years old.

N.V. Gogol is the author of stories - he is a real person living in the real world. He comes up with the plot of the story, characters, gives them names, endows them with certain abilities, makes the characters evil or good. The author gives a name to his creation, breaks the story into chapters and parts, comes up with endings.

In the story "The Enchanted Place" the role of the narrator is played by the beekeeper, who was told about the incident by the deacon, thus, as the author N.V. Gogol does not appear in this story. Grandfather Maxim told the deacon himself the story.

This story tells about how grandfather Maxim, dancing in front of his familiar chumaks, near the garden with cucumbers, felt that his legs were becoming stiff and it was not known how he ended up in an enchanted place, while he heard someone laugh behind him. Grandfather called this place devilish. He thought that a treasure must be hidden there, he even saw the light of a lit candle on one of the graves. Grandfather Maxim wanted to dig up the earth, but he had neither a shovel nor a spade with him. He decided to return with a shovel, but when he arrived, he could not find exactly the place where, in his opinion, the treasure was hidden. Since the downpour began, the grandfather wandered home with nothing.

The next day, grandfather took a spade and went to the very place in his garden where he could not dance, and hit the ground with a spade. Grandfather Maxim again found himself where the treasure was, began to dig and found a bowler hat. From time to time he spoke to himself, and someone repeated his own words after him. The grandfather was frightened and thought that it was the unclean one who did not want to give away the treasure, but he nevertheless brought the bowler hat to his grandchildren. As a result, it turned out that the cauldron contained not gold, but all sorts of rubbish. Since then, grandfather fenced the enchanted place with wattle and dumped weeds and all sorts of waste there, and in that part of the garden there never was a good harvest. And if the grandfather noticed something unusual, he began to be baptized.

N.V. Gogol, as it were, fenced himself off from this story and thereby entrusted her story to another person. I believe that in this way the writer wanted to show that he does not particularly believe in the authenticity of the story, but at the same time, the story conveys Russian folklore - what people believed in, what they were afraid of and how they fought against it. Reading this story, you feel like a part of the story that happened and as if you hear the voice of the narrator himself.

The story is told on behalf of the grandson of the protagonist, who tells us about the mysterious and mystical incident that happened to his grandfather.

Character characteristic

("Grandfather is dancing", illustration by V. Vasnetsov, 1901)

Grandfather appears before us as a cheerful, perky and cheerful old man. He often plays pranks on his family. Grandfather Maxim is very sociable, loves to talk to people passing by and listen to their stories, it is a great pleasure for him. Despite his age, he can easily start dancing to brag to the guests.

Grandfather Maxim is a rather bright and memorable character. He calls his grandchildren "dog children", while his grandchildren jokingly call him "old horseradish." But, despite this, we can see that the grandfather does not have a soul in his grandchildren. Grandfather Maxim is distinguished by friendliness and hospitality, he treats his guests with melons and tries in every possible way to cheer them up.

What especially attracts attention while reading the story is the unusual manner of speech of the protagonist: “Ah, Rogue Satan! so that you choke on a rotten melon! Grandfather is not even afraid of the devil, he swears and curses him.

From the words of the narrator, we learn that an unusual and mysterious incident happened to his grandfather.

When grandfather Maxim was dancing in the garden, he came across a strange place where his legs seemed to disobey him: “Look, a devilish place!” Unexpectedly, he found himself in a completely unfamiliar place, but he did not get scared, did not run away from there, but calmly and carefully studied everything.

All around was only a field, a dovecote, and the threshing floor of the volost clerk. Grandfather found a path, and aside from this path was a grave. Seeing how the candle was lit on this grave, the grandfather thought that a treasure was buried there, but he had nothing to dig it out.

But the main character, as we learn from the story, is very stubborn. After some time, he managed to return to the same place, and he began to dig up the treasure. Here, various devilry began to happen to grandfather Maxim: either someone sneezes behind him, then he hears different voices, then terrible faces appear. Grandfather already wanted to give up everything, but the desire to get rich was stronger, so he finally took the dug out boiler and ran away from there.

(The hero of history)

Upon his return, he discovered that in the cauldron he brought was not gold at all, as the hero had hoped, but all sorts of rubbish.

After this story, grandfather Maxim decided never to get involved with evil spirits again, he fenced off that enchanted place and began to throw various rubbish there.

Talking about the events taking place with grandfather Maxim, Gogol wanted to show that the wealth that was acquired dishonestly would not bring happiness. The protagonist contacted the devil and instead of the treasure he received a mockery - not only was there no gold in the cauldron, but it was also accidentally poured with slop.

With this story, Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol tells us, the readers, that we need to earn in an honest way and believe only in good and bright.
