Less than a year later, a global electronics failure occurred on the satellite, and the expensive device turned into a pile of non-working iron.
The next victim of solar bad luck was the Japanese space agency. In 1991, it sent the Yoko Solar X-ray Observatory into orbit. After working for a while, the lab "snapped" without surviving the eclipse.
At the moment when the moon blocked the rays of the star, for some unknown reason, the satellite lost control, the equipment failed. Soon Yoko deorbited and burned up in the atmosphere.
But the biggest victim of the "solar curse" was a series of Russian devices "Koronas". Back in the early 1990s. The Russian Academy of Sciences has planned the launch of ten specialized solar satellites. In reality, only three were sent into orbit.

Understood. It turned out that the power of the batteries was calculated incorrectly, it is not enough. The first of them is a European-American apparatus weighing 1.85 tons. It started back in 1995 and has worked out all the deadlines for a long time. There were accidents at SOHO from the very beginning. In the summer of 1998, the satellite was lost - the connection disappeared. Contact was restored only in the fall. Then the gyroscope broke down, then, in 2003, the motor of the antenna transmitting information to Earth failed. Therefore, the data from him has since come with gulkin's nose. The second working satellite - "Stereo" - is a complex of two small probes. He went into orbit at the end of 2006, initially calculated for only three years of work. It has a very narrow task - to take stereoscopic pictures of the Sun.
Simply put, the Earth received far from as much information about the star as we would like. More precisely, almost nothing. Therefore, scientists have long demanded a new cosmic eye. They only received it in February 2010, when NASA launched the three-ton solar observatory SDO. Adjustment in orbit took almost a year, but now - for the first time in history - a huge stream of data about the Sun has gone to Earth. In one hour, SDO transmits more information than previous devices provided in many months.
It was in these myriad piles of new digital data that sensational records were discovered with dozens of "alien ships" diving into the depths of the star. Unlike the vast majority of other evidence of the existence of UFOs, the record has official status, the picture is quite clear. According to the video from the observatory, the size of some objects is slightly smaller than that of the moon. It is not clear to what time the appearance of the word "sun" refers. Sreznevsky is not tied to a specific date. But there is an interesting indication - the sect of "solar changers". A team of researchers from the US, Europe, Chile and South Africa say it was five times closer to Earth than our current closest neighbor, Proxima Centauri.

The celestial body in question is Scholz's star, classified as a red dwarf. It passed through the outer part of the solar system, known as the Oort cloud.

This star was first identified as belonging to the class closest to the Sun by the German astronomer Ralf-Dieter Scholz in 2013.

Scholz's star in the Oort cloud was not alone. She was accompanied on her journey by a brown dwarf. So called substars, in which thermonuclear reactions stop, turning them into planet-like bodies.

Thanks to observations of the trajectory of the star, it became clear that 70 thousand years ago this space voyager flew past the Sun at a distance of 0.8 light years.

To date, this is the closest recorded approach of the solar system with another star.

For comparison, the distance to the nearest star to the solar system, Proxima Centauri from the constellation Alpha Centauri, is 4.2 light years.

Scientists believe that this is a region on the outskirts of the solar system, replete with comets with a diameter of more than 1.5 km. This zone is a kind of spherical shell of the solar system, which extends deep into space to a distance of up to 100,000 AU. (AU or astronomical unit is the average distance from the Earth to the Sun).

Due to the fact that Scholz's star passed only through the outer part of the Oort cloud, it did not cause an active migration of objects, including to the inner regions of the solar system.

It is expected that we will be able to observe the consequences of displacements of the trajectories of celestial bodies in this cloud in the form of the appearance of new long-period comets only after 2 million years.

Scientists, studying the dynamics of the movement of Scholz's star, for a long time could not determine whether it was approaching the solar system or moving away from it.

But measurements of its radial and tangential velocities showed that the star is moving away from the Earth, although it was relatively recently next to it.

Scholz's Star is the first luminary, apart from the Sun, that was once so close to the Earth.

According to scientists, their computer simulation of the movement of about ten thousand known stars with a probability of 98 percent showed that only one star could fall within the Oort cloud.

Astronomers are going to continue searching for other such stars using the European Space Agency's Gaia space telescope.

Minimal effect

A star passing through the Oort cloud has the potential to cause gravitational chaos in the solar system and turn the many comets that are here towards the center of the system.

But Eric Mamasek believes that the effect of Scholz's star visiting the solar system was minimal.

The worst-case scenario is a slow-moving, massive star that would come close to the Sun.

Scholz's star came relatively close, but its mass, like that of its brown dwarf companion, was small, and they flew fast. This explains why the solar system got off with a "light fright" as a result of the visit of these guests.

Nevertheless, according to one theory, having invaded the Oort cloud, Scholz's star could significantly increase its brightness, and our distant ancestors 70 thousand years ago could well observe it for some time.

With the beginning of the space age, ideas about our planet began to change rapidly. Seeing it in photographs taken from space, humanity finally realized that the Earth, in essence, is just a small ball, barely exceeding 12 thousand kilometers in diameter. The resources and possibilities for the development of the earth's energy were not endless either. It turned out that the power of terrestrial energy systems cannot grow indefinitely - otherwise the atmosphere may overheat, and all the consequences of this are still difficult to predict.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the thoughts of scientists turned to outer space: there is not only scope for deploying the most powerful energy systems, but also “gratuitous” energy sources. The first is, of course, the sun.

SPACE LIGHTING

A small fraction of solar radiation reaches the Earth's surface. But it can be increased with the help of space technology. For example, by mounting a sufficiently large reflector in near-Earth orbit. Such a mirror, of course, is primarily suitable for lighting; and there are still many remote places on Earth, devoid of electricity and roads for the transport of fuel.

The illumination and size of the light spot on the Earth's surface can be varied as needed by calculating all the parameters in advance: the height of the orbit, the area and orientation of the reflector, etc. The luminosity of the reflector can be made like that of the full moon, or it can be ten
times greater. Comparison with the Moon suggests naming such a satellite reflector Lunetta.

However, the author of this proposal, the well-known American scientist, astronautics theorist Krafft Ericke, believes that in many respects Lunetta will be more convenient than the real Moon. The main disadvantage of a natural satellite of the Earth is that the full moon shines in our sky for no more than 20% of the monthly cycle. And Lupetta is able to create an almost permanent full moon! (For this, of course, you will have to program the orientation of the reflector accordingly.)

According to Erique's calculations, to illuminate the densely populated urban areas of the Earth, it will be necessary to assemble several reflectors in orbit with a total luminosity of 40-80 PL (full moons). For areas of agricultural work and large construction projects, 15-30 times
the superiority of the Lunetta over the natural night star, and for new settlements in developing countries, 10-20 PL will suffice.

But how to make "cosmic lighting" continuous throughout the night? One of the solutions is to assemble a reflector in the so-called geostationary orbit: an artificial satellite, launched in the equatorial plane into a circular orbit with a radius of about 42,000 km, seems to hang motionlessly over a given point on the earth's surface, since the period of revolution of such a satellite is exactly equal to a day.

The geostationary orbit is very convenient for illuminating the tropics and subtropical regions of the Earth. But what about the polar regions (where, by the way, artificial lighting is much more needed)? In this case, it is more convenient to use orbits with a high inclination (the inclination is the angle between the equatorial plane and the plane of the orbit) and with a radius that provides a period of revolution that is a multiple of a day. If a geostationary Lunetta needs one reflector, then for a semi-diurnal orbit, to provide eight hours of illumination, they will need two (offset by 90 ° in orbit), for an 8-hour orbit - three, etc. The dimensions of the reflector are determined depending on the height of the orbit and from the required illumination: for example, for a stationary Lunetta with a capacity of 80 submarines, a reflector with an area of ​​​​26 square kilometers will be required. For 1 submarine, only 0.22 square kilometers is enough, which requires a mirror diameter of 530 m. However, if we want to use cosmic lighting even on cloudy nights, when the sky above the bare is covered with a dense veil of clouds, then we will have to increase the mirror size by almost 10 once. At the same time, according to Erika, the area of ​​the illuminated area on the Earth's surface will reach 88,000 square kilometers. In other words, one Lunetta can
to illuminate such a country as Portugal (where in 1975 the last annual congress of the International Federation of Astronautics was held, at which, among others, these problems were discussed).


Structurally, Lunetta can be a rigid tubular frame covered with a metallized plastic film. Based on the technological level achievable by the 90s of our century, the weight of one square kilometer of Lunetta will be about 200-300 tons.

It is reasonable to ask: what will it all cost? According to Erike, the creation of such a space lamp will cost about 15 billion dollars. At first glance, the number seems huge. But remember that the Apollo program alone cost $25 billion. Considering that each square kilometer of Lunetta will save about 2 million tons of oil annually (which is burned today in thermal power plants to generate the electricity needed for lighting), that, in addition, a lot of metal and money spent today on building lighting electrical networks will be saved, which thanks to cosmic illumination, sowing and harvesting agricultural work will be doubled and the efficiency of the use of agricultural machines will increase, that the semi-annual polar night will disappear, then you can believe Erica, who believes that after 25-30 years of operation Lunetta will give a great economic effect.

However, another important question arises: will any harmful consequences of a multiple increase in night illumination be revealed over time? There is every reason to hope that no harm will come. The point is, first of all, that the natural light of the Sun, electromagnetic waves, to which everything on earth has adapted over billions of years of evolution, will be used for night illumination. In this sense, the growth in the power of various ground-based sources of the electromagnetic field is much more dangerous - radio stations, power grids, neon advertisements, radars, etc. Of course, it is possible that Lunetta will make life very difficult for some animals at first. But this problem is unlikely to become particularly acute. First, thanks to a noticeable intensification of agriculture, it will be possible to increase the area of ​​reserves (where familiar natural conditions, including night darkness, will be preserved). Secondly, organisms will undoubtedly adapt to new
conditions. After all, animals and birds of the polar regions do not suffer from round-the-clock lighting during the polar day.

HEAT FROM SPACE

Reflected sunlight can be used not only for lighting, but also for heating selected areas of the earth's surface. The vast expanses of Siberia or Canada could produce much more grain if the summer there were lengthened and the average annual temperature increased by ten degrees. Increasing the density of sunlight (adding an artificial stream turned to the Earth by a reflector to the natural light flux of the Sun) is not only heating. It also encourages photosynthesis, increasing plant productivity. But it is precisely in the growth of the productivity of photosynthesis that the solution to the problem of protein deficiency hanging over humanity lies.

It has long been known that not all chemical reactions that involve the process of photosynthesis require lighting. Some of them continue in the dark, after the light has already been turned off. Thus, in addition to enhancing daylight illumination in agricultural areas with short, cold summers, short-term night illumination can also be applied to tropical countries in order to increase the productivity of photosynthesis there as well.

According to preliminary estimates, to stimulate plant growth, an additional luminous flux of about 20% of the total solar one is needed (for comparison: the intensity of illumination given by Lunetta is from 0.00001 to 0.0001 full solar). To achieve this intensity of reflected light, the area of ​​the mirror must be increased many times over in comparison with the Lunetta. Krafft Erike calls such a reflector to enhance photosynthesis Soletta - from the Sun. If Soletta is mounted in a four-hour orbit, then to create 10% of the light flux of the full Sun (PS) on the Earth's surface, the mirror area must be made equal to 270 square kilometers. Further, the figures grow faster and faster: for 20% of the PS - 500 km2, for 40% of the PS - 1,100 km2, for 50% of the PS - 6,600 km2.

The minimum area on the Earth's surface illuminated from a four-hour orbit will be about 2,800 square kilometers. The number of Solettes for a four-hour exposure, respectively, will be: in a four-hour orbit - 3, in a six-hour orbit - 2 and in an eight-hour - 1.

It is assumed that each Soletta will be a "swarm" of reflectors, the light fluxes of which should be focused and superimposed on each other. Each individual reflector (“standard unit”) is assembled from standard elements up to 200 square kilometers in area. Standard elements are movable relative to each other and must be electronically oriented according to a given program in order to focus the light flux and direct it to a given point on the Earth.

Soletta will be serviced both from the Earth's surface with the help of a powerful aerospace transport system with a payload capacity of 1000-5000 tons (it is still difficult to imagine such systems today, but we are talking about the beginning of the next millennium), and from a special station in near-Earth orbit with a crew of 150-200 people, interorbital remote-controlled and manned vehicles.

This program, according to preliminary estimates, will cost from 30 to 60 billion dollars. Ericke's calculations convince of the expediency of the costs: only an increase in the productivity of agriculture will fully pay off the investment in 25-30 years. But more than just agriculture will benefit from Soletta. If you increase its power, all earthly technology will reach a new energy level. Erica named it like this:

TWO-STAR ECOLOGY

The fruits of this more powerful, as Erike calls it, ecological Soletta will go to posterity. And the generation of the 90s will have to start this business already. According to Ericke, it will be possible to talk about a two-star ecology when, to the natural light flux of the Sun falling on the Earth, an artificial one is added, which is about 80% of the natural one (the Earth, as it were, will acquire a second luminary comparable to the Sun). To do this, it would be necessary to assemble the Solette group in geostationary orbit with a total area of ​​\u200b\u200bup to 66,000 square kilometers. As a result, on the Earth's surface, in a selected area of ​​100-150 thousand square kilometers, the intensity of the light flux at night will be 0.8 PS (in the daytime it will, of course, be 1.8 PS). On each clear night, this area will receive about 660 billion kilowatt-hours, which will provide more than 2E14 kW. h annually.

Where to put this abyss of energy? Probably, the descendants will find for it such an application that our imagination is not yet able to invent. (Oh, don't worry so much! S-F) But a lot can be imagined even now. Energy can be used to irrigate deserts, produce fresh water (and there is not enough of it now) and liquid hydrogen, which, apparently, will be an ideal fuel for high-speed aviation, aerospace systems, and perhaps for land transport. An abundance of energy will ensure the growth of industry and cities, the exploration of the ocean and space ...

OTHER IDEAS. A NEARER FUTURE

Cosmonautics can help the energy industry in the near future as well.

IDEA 1. With the development of nuclear energy, the problem of eliminating radioactive waste arises. Leaving them on Earth, to put it mildly, is undesirable. The best thing would be to throw them into space. But, of course, not haphazardly and not anywhere: it would be good to dump them at some specific points in space so that these points can be marked in red on space maps and the paths of ships can be laid away from them. Fortunately, such points in space exist - these are libration points (or Lagrange points), they are also in the Earth-Moon system and in the Sun-Jupiter system. As is known, at two of the five Lagrange points the space object will be in a state of stable equilibrium, maintaining the initial distances from the main bodies of the system. Thus, astronautics can ensure the development
nuclear energy by removing its waste.

IDEA 2. You can try to develop nuclear power in space by assembling reactors in near-Earth orbits and transferring energy to Earth in any available way (more on that below). This approach is attractive because the excess heat will not overheat the atmosphere, but will be dissipated in outer space. Not-

IDEA 3rd. With the help of satellites, especially geostationary satellites, it is convenient to relay energy from one point of the globe to another. At the same time, metal is saved, which would go to the construction of ground distribution networks.

IDEA 4th. Solar energy can be converted into other forms: ground-based solar installations have long existed. But they are low-powered and entirely dependent on the vagaries of the weather (not to mention the fact that they do not work at night). In space - also for a relatively long time - solar panels are working properly, converting light into electricity. Microwave generators already exist that convert electric current into microwave radiation. Microwave radiation is easily focused into a "power beam", which is not afraid of atmospheric interference - rain, snow, fog - and which itself
practically does not affect the atmosphere (and this, as already mentioned, is extremely important).

Devices for receiving microwave energy - half-wave dipole antennas and solid-state diodes that convert microwaves to direct current, have also been developed for a long time.

What remains? Assemble a support platform in geostationary orbit and place solar panels, microwave generators and a transmitting antenna on it. On Earth, accordingly, it is necessary to mount a receiving antenna, and the energy flow (which can be the source of both the Sun and a nuclear reactor) will flow from space to the Earth's surface. Or (see idea No. 3) from a ground power station through space to consumers at another point on the planet.

promises to be very high. No wonder three American firms under contract with NASA in 1974 began to develop it. According to the original design, a transmitting antenna with a diameter of about 1 km will weigh about 6000 tons. The diameter of the ground antenna will be 10 times larger. Defined and
the optimal frequency at which atmospheric interference to the power beam will be minimal is 2.5 gigahertz. According to the authors of the project, the operation of the system can begin around 1990.

It is obvious that the creation and operation of even the simplest space power system is hardly possible on the basis of disposable launch vehicles used today. Therefore, the question arose of creating maneuverable reusable transport systems for delivering cargo from the Earth to orbits and back. The first step along this path, taken in the United States, is the development of the Space Shuttle system (see Science and Life

No. 11, 1974). However, to create Soletta, one cannot do without aerospace transport systems (see "Science and Life" No. 8,

1970). But this is a topic for a special discussion.
