What is R'n'B dancing? It’s quite easy to visualize how to dance RnB. You just need to turn on any music channel or open YouTube, and you can immediately see clips of Usher, Janet Jackson, Timberlake, Missy Sixty, Mariah Carey, India Jay-Z and many, many other stars performing “pure” RnB or using elements of this style.

Today RnB occupies the place of the most popular dance style of club dances in the country; it is a separate layer of the new culture, because RnB today is music, dance, clothing, the topics of life, and clubs. It is even estimated that about half of the music programs around the world are occupied by RnB!

In fact, few people understand the intricacies of the style, and not everyone can distinguish RnB from hip-hop, pop or soul. If you are really going to plunge into this atmosphere, then it is worth knowing that RnB stands for Rhythm and Blues (according to some sources Rap and Bit). The combination of rhythms and melodic form is the essence of the music of this style. RnB is quite light music, and for some, philosophical music, music that is equally pleasant to listen to in a big noisy company or alone in the player. And yes - RnB music is simply created for dancing to.

RnB as a dance style originally appeared from hip-hop; it was, as it were, adapted to the twilight and lights of clubs. A little less pressure, a little more emphasis, a change of melodies and rhythms - this is what gives birth to an extremely interesting direction, directly dependent on the music. Simply by playing with every nuance, word or pause, it’s easy to achieve a really cool dance. If we consider typical movements, then today's RnB is a mixture of Hip-Hop, Pops, Locking and Funk.

This is a rich, indivisible direction in which there is always a place for something new. Over time, in the manner of performing the “RNB” dance, more passion and provocation appeared, more art than animal instinct.

RnB dance lessons are available to everyone - you just have to start practicing and little by little you will feel the strength to aesthetically obey these rhythms. RnB dances are characterized by a fairly fast rhythm and very lively dynamics.

By the way, RnB and hip-hop are often confused. Learning to distinguish them is really not that easy. In the RnB dance there is a very specific movement - the shake, often called “kach”, it is performed like this: the dancer tenses exclusively the stomach, but the rest of the muscles remain in a relaxed state. Sheik gives the impression that the dancer is not at all collected, as if he is dancing as he pleases, without any technical basis. No, of course, there is absolutely no place here without technology, but the illusion of such negligence takes us to the dark quarters of New York, to where African Americans have created a whole code of behavior: their swagger is only a pronounced demonstration of self-sufficiency and their own independence.

Style Description

Rhythm and blues comes from hip-hop and exists as a separate dance and music direction. This style is a mixture of two completely different directions. Rhythm is fast, clear and blues is soft, gentle and smooth. Currently, R&B is almost the most fashionable dance both in Russia and abroad. Contemporary RnB dance is characterized by sensuality, movements come from the heart, technique is intertwined with emotions. The movements of the dancer very much depend on how he “read” the music.

Basic movements

A characteristic feature of rhythm and blues is considered to be harmony in a combination of flexible and smooth movements with rigid fixation points. R’n’B dance, which reflects music, a combination of two types of movements, it organically absorbed plasticity and dots; looking at the performer, a transition in movement is noticeable, for example, from the “wooden” state to the “mercury” state. Changing the nature of the movement can occur in any order; fixation of a certain muscle can be combined with a wave across the body; you can work hard with the upper body and smoothly with the lower one. Rhythm and blues performed by women is an active movement of the chest, simulating a heartbeat, movement of the hips, and also strip plasticity.

One of the well-known movements in rhythm and blues is the shake (shake or swing), it is performed thanks to the tense abdominal muscles, at the same moment, the rest of the body is in a state of relaxation. The shake creates the effect of lack of composure and that the dance occurs according to the dictates of the heart. This is an amazing illusion, because without technique it is impossible to move in this dance.

History of the style

There is an opinion that this direction was formed as an independent musical style in the forties of the 20th century in America, as a lighter alternative to the blues.

W. Robson made a huge contribution to the development of dance; W. Robson is known as a choreographer who taught dance to Michael and Janet Jackson. The well-known waves and moonwalk have found a second life thanks to R&B.

After R’n’B became closer to other dance styles: hip-hop, soul, quiet storm, funk, it became the pinnacle of dance fashion.

The brightest R’n’B performers:

  • Chris Brown;
  • Bobby Valentino;
  • Toni Braxton;
  • Mario;
  • Mariah Kerry;
  • Janet Jackson;
  • John Legend;
  • Omarion.

Now the R&B music direction has become very popular, especially among young people. The fashionable phenomenon is reaching an increasingly wider circle of people: R&B is listened to, attended parties, and finally studied in dance studios and schools.

R&B as a dance

The name of this style stands for Rhythm & Blues or Rap & Bit. The second name is more suitable for defining R&B as a dance direction. It was formed as a mixture of modern dance trends and classical choreography. R&B is based on dances such as New Style, contemporary, and dance elements of MTV culture. In other words, R&B is a combination of all the dances that are now popular in nightclubs, performed by show business stars and their backup dancers.

R&B technique

As in many other modern trends, the basis of R&B is the ability to move beautifully and fieryly to modern music. Improvisation, the ability to convey the mood and style of a song are very important. Very often, in addition to the correct technique of performing movements, the emphasis is on the expression with which the dancer perceives the rhythm, melody, his body and himself. As for the technical component of dance, modern schools teach sliding movements (glides and slides), turns and transitions, the ability to isolate movements from each other and combine both sharpness and smoothness in dance.

Related to Hip-Hop

R&B dance style has a lot in common with Hip-Hop. The technical arsenal includes jumping, active swinging of arms, swinging - and these are integral elements of Hip-Hop dance. From breakdancing, R&B borrowed clear and brittle fixes and points; slides and waves came from modern jazz and strip plastic. R&B is gaining momentum in Russia, evolving and changing rapidly

History of origin

The R&B style stands for "rhythm and blues" in English.
This, at first glance, unexpected name is explained by the fact that initially R&B was an independent direction within the “blues” and owed its appearance to it.
Blues emerged in the second half of the 19th century as a genre of African-American folk music. The intonations of social and racial inequality of the oppressed African-American population were heard in it.
While remaining a traditional folk art, blues gradually became professionalized and entered the concert stage. Subsequently, in the 20th century, he gave the world talented and brilliant performers. This happened largely due to the emergence of the most intense, powerful and energetic-sounding form of blues - the R&B style.
Since then, the popularity of rhythm and blues has not faded: now it is a whole layer of new culture (music, dance, clubs, clothing style, worldview, expensive pretentious party).

This trendy dance trend has very little in common with the original content of the expression “rhythm and blues” as a style of music.
Modern R&B dance is an intricate interweaving of hip-hop, funk, jazz, street with a slight touch of “black culture”, so the free and incredibly plastic movement of the body at a party can be called rhythm and blues only with a large degree of convention, even if all "pas" are used correctly.
If you want to master the R"n"B style, you can take a few lessons at a dance school or practice finding harmony between music and body at home while listening to your favorite music.
First you need to learn how to “pump up” every part of your body. The correct “kick” comes, as a rule, from the center of the abdomen. If you do this “pump” correctly, it is the abdominal muscles that become tense. The remaining muscles need to be relaxed.
